Last season, Carbon boy's basketball team went to Colorado and dominated their games. This season, Coach Ted Bianco knew that the teams would be ready for them and they were. Carbon dropped all three of their games to some good Colorado squads moving to 1-4 in preseason action.
The Dinos lost to Palisade 69-63 in double overtime on Thursday. They then were defeated by Central 61-55 on Friday. The dinos wrapped up their Colorado road trip with a final 58-47 loss to Fruita on Saturday.
Bianco felt like his squad had a chance to win in each game but in all the match-ups had a few flat quarters of play that took them right out of the action. "We can't give up big quarters and expect to win against the good team" he growled. "Turnovers were a big key to our losses."
On Thursday against Palisade, Carbon built an 11 point lead in the first only to let Palisade take a 46-33 lead into the fourth. The Dinos fought back and tied the game by the buzzer. "We had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a free throw to send it into OT." relayed Bianco. Both teams put up another five in the first OT and then Palisade shut down the Dinos with a 13-7 run to win.
On Friday Jordan Moynier was on fire, hitting 20 points to lead all scorers. But Carbon started flat in the game and even a final push in the fourth quarter was not enough to pull them out of the hole they dug early in the game.
On Saturday they matched Fruita point for point for two quarters of play. Each team took 24 points with them to the locker room. Again Carbon could not sustain their momentum and they only could put up six in the third while Fruita banged in 19. The Dinos picked it back up in the fourth, while Fruita never did slow down and the loss was Carbon's for the taking. Moynier continued to hit in double figures with 18 and Brandon Wilson had 16. Wilson was hot from the three point line with three from beyond the arc.
Carbon traveled to Emery for a tournament this weekend. They took on Park City on Friday and Snow Canyon on Saturday. The team walked away with a win and a loss.
Moynier continued to take the bull by the horn and put 14 on the board and pulled in six rebounds as the Dinos pounded Park City 57-35. Wilson put up 11 to help the cause. The Dinos started fast and were up by 10 at the quarter. They increased their lead to 33-9 at the half. Park City put on a small run in the third and cut the lead by four. But the Dinos didn't quit and played a strong fourth to put the game to bed.
On Saturday it was the Dinos who came out a bit sluggish and in the end dropped the game 47-62 to Snow Canyon. The Warriors had them doubled up by the quarter. The squad tried to climb back in, but was still down by five at the half. After the half the Dinos continued to lose ground as the Warriors were too much for the team.
Zac Jones was the leading scorer for the Dinos with 11 followed by Moynier with 10. Jones and Wilson had a trey apiece in the losing effort.
The Dinos will play at home twice next week with a game against Canyon View on Friday night. They then meet up with Cedar City on Saturday night. Games begin at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High gym.
