During the first two weeks in April, Helper Junior High will be hosting a special school workshop courtesy of the Utah Arts Council. Stan Secrest, also fondly known as Stan the Drum Man, will be teaching students and staff how to make beautiful, individually designed handmade drums. Each participant will take home a full-sized traditional drum - a quality instrument that can last a lifetime. According to Cathy Wilson of Carbon School District, community businesses have been incredibly supportive, donating materials to the workshop. When the drums are finished, there will be drum instruction workshops conducted by Helper Junior High faculty, as well group drum participation. There is also a community drum building workshop planned for the weekend of April 9-11. Participants will build a full-sized djembe or ashiko. There are several spaces left in the workshop costs to build the various drums vary. For those that are interested, E-mail Jeff Zivkovic at zivkovicj@carbonschools.org or zivkovic.jeff@gmail.com to reserve a space in the workshop.
