Carbon High's cross country team always does well on the road or at home.
But it never hurts to have a little home court advantage.
On Oct. 11, Carbon competed in the Region 8 championship meet held in Price. The three mile course traveled from the Carbon soccer field, out into the hills and then back to finish on the Carbon High Track. Despite the recent rains, the course held up well and times were fast for all the runners.
Carbon boys took a fourth place region finish led by Paul Goodrich who took second overall in the race. Jaren Richens was 23rd, Kent Olsen 25th and Travis Hepworth was 26th.
Beau Morley, Brett Wells and Andrew Bates rounded out the team headed to state by finishing strong.
The state meet was held in Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake on Oct. 18.
The Carbon girl's team finished just out of third place and will not be sending anyone to state. But despite not making the cut, the entire team ran good races.
With only four girls on the team, several girls from other teams at Carbon stepped up to fill out the squad at the last minute. With that Carbon ended up with 13 girls representing the school. Girls from the volleyball, soccer and cheerleading squads all stepped up to try their hand at the grueling three mile course. And all of them finished.
The top finishers for the girl's team were the Smith sisters. Elisabeth took 14th place. In a photo finish Patricia edged out twin sister Samantha and they took 15th and 16th respectively.
Runners Paul Goodrich and Travis Hepworth have been awarded academic all-region honors for the 2006 year.
