Not even a month after opening to the public, the Gigliotti fishing pond in Helper is experiencing problems. The fishing action is still strong and residents visit the pond on a regular basis, however it seems as if the water in the pond is slowly vanishing. The pond is apparently leaking at the rate of one acre foot every four days. Division of Wildlife Resources officials will allow the pond to draw down, until the leak is identified. At this point, no wet areas around the pond have been detected.
DWR official Louis Berg plans to have one or more scuba divers search the pond bottom for the source of the leak. The search will likely occur next week. After detecting the site of the problem, the proper repairs will be made. The site does remain open to anglers.
