Elisebeth Smith tries to overtake an Emery runner at the end of the race while Paul Goodrich charges over the finish line during the meet at Carbon High last Wednesday.

On Sept. 27 seven teams competed in an invitational cross country meet at the Carbon High outdoor sports complex.

It was a crowded field with 84 boys and 54 girls competing. Carbon placed fourth as a team in the meet.

With Paul Goodrich nursing an injured knee, the team wasn't as competitive as usual. Finishing ninth, two minutes off his record time, Goodrich was happy just to be able to compete.

Andrew Bates has been Carbon's most improved runner this so far this year. He finished 49th out of 84 with a very respectable time.

Finishing in the top 20 was Bea Morley 15th and Kent Olsen 18th. Elisabeth Smith and Samantha Smith were the only two girls running for Carbon and they finished 12th and 18th respectively.

The day before Carbon had participated in a meet in Duchesne. Kent Olsen placed fifth, while Travis Hepworth took home tenth. The team placed fourth out of seven teams in that meet as well.

Carbon will compete in Delta on Oct. 4.

The region meet will be held in Price on October 11.
