Rantings and Ravings

Saturday morning I was on my usual early morning walk with Maki when we met a lady picking up garbage and carrying it with her as she walked. I had seen her before and was not sure what she was doing. I stopped to chat and found out that she is just a good soul who cares about the path she walks each day.

This day though she was rewarded with a $10 bill that she found on the ground. I think she should end up with much more than that for the good deed she does in cleaning up the trash that is thrown along the Woodhill Road every day.

I meet a lot of interesting people as I walk the roads and single track each day. Last week I encountered a former resident who was back from over seas for a visit. He said he had read about the single track and a friend told him who to contact to get a map of it when he was in town.

Last year my husband and I ran into a guy from Salt Lake who was riding the trail before his son played in the Little League tournament here in Price. He was jealous of the proximity of the trail to our community.

A few weeks ago there was a group of friends heading on to bigger adventures when they pulled up on the hill to camp. Since they had their bikes with them they rode the trail for entertainment in the evening.

There are many locals who are regulars up on the hill as well. There are the two women and three dogs that frequent the hill. I can hear them laughing as they walk from a ways off.

There are several others who also take their dogs up to walk them and let them roam free off the leash.

There is the Wednesday night bike riding group and the early morning hard core riders I pass quite often. There are also the many that drive up to walk their dogs without getting out of their cars.

The hill also fields many four wheelers and dirt bike riders who criss-cross the maze of roads in the area above our town.

I have been passed by many of our local athletes as well who use the roads and trails on the hill for their workout track.

On any given day this area is a community treasure. I have heard that the private land owner wants to sell the land that sits right on top of the hill. I would hate to see this turned into another high end subdivision that limits what we are able to do there.

I challenge the county to consider buying this land for a community open space. People from all over come to our area looking for just the kind of experience we can find right in our own back yard. It would be a crime to lose it.

The community cares enough to use it often. The county and the city have developed recreation for skate boarders, gun sports, 4x4 rock climbers, equestrian events, and many other groups. I think they need to take a hard look at this area as a community resource that fits as a multiple use area. It would make for a wonderful marketing tool to pull in new businesses and tourism.

Maybe no one cares that this area could disappear as a place we can use for walking, biking and four wheeling. I think the lady who cleans up the trash on her walk cares. E-mail me at terry@sunad.com and give me your opinion about this becoming a county recreation area.
