The College of Eastern Utah swept Colorado Northwestern in Rangely to finish off their regular season. It was a touch of too little too late to salvage a season that Coach Scott Madsen had high hopes for. CEU finished their season in 5th place with a 14-26 SWAC record. They were 11 games under 500 overall with a 21-32 record.
Game one of the four game series was a 12-3 blow out. Tai Penrod allowed only two runs on two hits. CEU jumped out early with four runs in the first and never looked back.
Game two saw CEU continue its offensive assault and scored another 12 runs. This time it only took five innings to do the damage. Bryan Smith pitched a complete game with a three run shut out to finish off the Rangely team 12-0.
Game three was a bit closer. CEU used four pitchers to overcome Colorado 4-2. Jayson Madson was the winning pitcher. He pitched two innings and allowed Colorado's only two runs.
The final game had Colorado jumping out to an early two run lead, but CEU tied it in the fourth and added two in the seventh to finish the sweep. Cole Evans recoded the victory in the final game.
The team then slid into the tournament with the fifth seed. Traveling to Carson City, Nev., they faced off against the third place team in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, Salt Lake Community College. Playing some of their best ball of the season, the Eagles took the game into extra innings. They were unable to seal the win and lost a close one 3-2 to SLCC.
The next day they squared off with sixth seeded Southern Nevada Community College. The last time these two teams met CEU could not hit the ball. CEU found just enough offense this time to out slug Southern Nevada 6-5 to stay alive in the tournament.
The win gave them another chance. Third ranked Southern Idaho was their next opponent.
The men from Twin Falls Idaho were too strong for CEU though. With a final score of 9-5 CEU bowed out of the tournament and wrapped up its season. The team played well in the final games of SWAC play and finished off on a high note.
