Winless softball season ends in last game
|Hard fought losses with slides and jumps for the ball ended last week when the Carbon girls softball team finally broke their own personal drought by beating the fourth ranked team in the state, Juan Diego.|
In their last game of the season, the Carbon High Softball team showed their stuff with an impressive victory over fourth in the state ranked Juan Diego.
It was a high scoring affair on both sides as Carbon came out ahead with a final score of 10-7.
Torry Johnson took the mound for Carbon and pitched one of the best games of the season.
In the early going neither team could manage much offense. The defense held until Carbon stuck first with a run on the second. They held the lead until the bottom of the fifth when Juan Diego came back with two to take the lead.
Coach Tony Pinedo knew that this is the point where the team has had problems all season. Once the other team takes the lead the girls have struggled.
Not this game, where in the top of the sixth, Carbon came out swinging. They put six runs across the plate to take the lead for good.
Carbon added three more in the seventh to pad the score.
Carbon then put the pressure on Juan Diego and it looked good for the Dinos.
But the Lady Soaring Eagles were not about to give up that easily. They came roaring back with five runs and things looked a bit shaky.
But when Tabby Cummins hauled in the final catch at the fence the girls were able to enjoy the win.
Coach Pinedo said that the team played like the team he had known they could be all season. He was pleased with the team effort and their ability to not fold in the final inning when it looked grim.
"The girls did all the work in this win" Pinedo stated. "They capitalized on the mistakes of the other team and played well"
The game was a good end to an otherwise disappointingly season for the team.
The girls did not make the play offs and end the season with this single win.
