Carbon catcher Erica Potts tags an Emery High player at home base during the latest version of the Dino-Spartan rivalry. Emery won 8-2.

Hopes were high and attitudes were good as the Carbon High softball team took to the field against the Emery Spartans Tuesday afternoon on their home field.

It looked good and the Dinos even jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning. But in the long run, the Lady Spartans outlasted the Carbon girls 8-2 in another disappointment for Coach Tony Pinedo and his team.

After giving up two runs to the Spartans in the top of the second, Carbon was able to shut the Spartans down for a few innings. The game was tight through the fifth inning but the Lady Dinos just couldn't get their bats going to put something on the scoreboard either.

Carbon's offense looked good for five innings as they made the plays they needed to when they had to get out of an inning. Paige Pinedo was pitching a good game despite a nagging pain in her right knee.

In the sixth, Emery began to find their stroke and broke the game open. Adding two in the sixth and three in the seventh, Emery pulled away. Carbon had no answer on the offensive end.

Carbon did manage six hits in the game but was unable to convert those into scoring opportunities. Five errors committed by the Lady Dinos did not help either.

However there was a very encouraging sign during the game. The cohesiveness of the team seemed much better than it has been in most prior games this year.

The girls now have to turn around and head to powerful North Sanpete on Thursday. North Sanpete is 3-0 in Region 8 play, leading the league.

The team's next home game is April 11 against Juan Diego with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
