The Castle Valley Athletic Association held their annual junior varsity boys basketball tournament at the beginning of this month and the Helper Junior High Rams walked away with the crown.
On the first day of the tournament Helper opened up against the San Rafael Bulldogs. It was a hard fought game, with both teams playing well. The final score of that contest was 55-53 in favor of the Carbon County lads. That win put the team into the championship game.
Leading the scoring for Helper were Clint Finkbiner with 24 points.
On the second day of the tournament, the Rams played the Pirates of Mont Harmon. Both teams came out ready to play.
The first half of the game was hard fought and Helper went into the locker room with a 20 to 14 lead.
After the half both teams came out ready to fight. In the end though, Helper prevailed 41-37. The leading scorer for Helper was Beau Richy with 16 points.
Coach Trent Machello said he was proud of his Ram team and said everyone on the team left everything on the floor to achieve the wins.
"Both of the wins were team wins," he said.
Players on this years team included Chard Martino, Boyd Marsing, Tanner Bradley, Tyson Damron, Avan Crespin, Beau Richy, Chris Rummel, Brett Davis, Chase Sillitoe, Clint Finkbiner, and Jed Powers.
The team was coached by Marchello and Scott Nielsen.
"Along with the tournament we also won the region championship as well," said Marchello. "Without the support of the teachers, staff and parents we couldn't have done it."
