Letter to the Editor: Garbage not a delight

The few nice days we've managed to have in Carbon County gave me Spring fever and I decided to go on a few walks and hikes, smell the cedar, juniper and sagebrush and feel that Spring thing.

When I walked from the parkway to the power plant, mostly what I saw were bottles after plastic bottles the whole way on the railroad tracks, thrown out by the engineers and train workers I assume. As they were the same types of bottles I called the railroad to complain about before when I walked from Scofield to Colton bridge and tried to pick them all up on the way but couldn't even carry them all.

When I went walking the first time out by the airport I didn't get very far because it was just too sad so I left the area. There were sacks of household garbage, appliances, and about a million shell casings.

The next area I went to was a little farther away. I hadn't gone a half mile when I found two pink chairs, a mattress, numerous bottles, a washer, and lots of fast food containers.

It's bad enough to me that Carbon County is one of the few places I've ever been that doesn't recycle anything, but to have a designated land fill and have our own residents drive a mile or two past it and throw things out in trees is very upsetting, especially when you don't even have to pay a fee to use the dump area.

Maybe being blessed enough to live in an area like this makes some people take it for granted. But we need to take care of what we have. I can see why people who are fortunate enough to own land won't let anyone on it.

I was thinking what I could teach an inner city child that had a first opportunity to walk out in the cedars and this is all I could say. The favorite distance to throw garbage off the road is about 50 feet. Favorite color of tacky furniture and carpet are pink. Favorite "Bubba" food to go with shells and beer is chicken, and favorite bottle to urinate in is a green vessel. That's our nature trip for today boys and girls; good luck in the future.
