Freshman Julia Potts holds onto a rebound against a perimeter of Canyon View players. The Lady Dinos dropped to the Falcons before moving to consolation brackets and taking fifth.

The Lady Dinos advanced into the quarter final round only to see themselves paired up against a powerful Canyon View team surrendered a 39-27 defeat ending chances of a repeat championship.

The Falcons have been known for their defense all year and the Thursday game was more of the same. They showed no mercy to the defending 3A champions as they held Carbon to a mere eight points in the first half of play. Coach Bruce Bean said his girls came out tentative and by the time they were able to get things going it was too late.

The Dinos also played good defense, not letting the Falcons run away with the game. The third quarter saw the girls from Carbon try and climb back into the game but the Falcons added two more to the already 10 point deficit.

By the final quarter neither team had an edge as the two teams matched scoring efforts. Carbon had no real scoring effort throughout the game. Tabby Cummins was the leading scorer with seven.

The loss sent Carbon into the consolation bracket. Friday afternoon the Dinos went head to head with Snow Canyon for the championship in that bracket. In what could have been the final game the Carbon seniors played as a team, they stepped up their offense and took charge of the game. Bean felt his team played really well for the whole game.

Defense was strong for both teams in the first quarter of play, but the Dinos put up two more than Snow to take an early lead. They really put the hammer down in the second quarter and shut Snow off the glass, allowing them only two points.

Sitting on an eight point lead, the Dinos weren't content to take things for granted. They added another eight to their lead. Snow gave one final push to take back the game, but in the end the Dinos stayed strong and cruised to a 14 point victory. The final score was Carbon 44, Snow Canyon 30.

Cummins kept her prep career going by being the leading scorer once again. She had 10. Her teammates Danielle Martino and Meesha Rasmussen combined for 17 points to keep their season alive for one more game.

Saturday saw the Dinos playing Logan for the right to fifth place in the state tourney. The Grizzlies put the hurt on Carbon with a 16-9 offensive run.

The Dinos were not ready to concede a loss and climbed right back in it by the half. At the break they were only down by two. They continued to eat away at the lead tying it up by the end of the third quarter. With one final drive, Carbon squeaked out a victory by two. Final in the game was Carbon 57, Logan 55.

Cummins dropped in 14 points and went 8-8 at the line, but the scoring leader this game was Rasmussen who knocked in 16. Rasmussen hit the team's only three pointer as well.

Bean was really proud of the way his team battled back and did not give up. "The team represented the school and themselves well during the entire tournament," he stated Sunday night.

Next year's team will be a young squad with six seniors leaving. There is not much in the way of junior talent stepping in to fill their shoes either. Bean is going to have his work cut out for him in a real rebuilding year next season. There are several of this year's freshman and sophomore squad that are ready to step up. In a few years though, the 3A ranks are going to need to again watch out for the Carbon girls as the team matures.
