Smoke billows from the site of a local controlled burn last spring. Starting Feb. 15, the United States Bureau of Land Management planned to conduct a prescribed fire at location starting one mile north of East Carbon. The site extends approximately five miles north of the city and the controlled burn will continue as the weather permits until the BLM's division of fire management completes the project. The purpose of the project is to reduce hazardous fuels. Columns of smoke as well as flames may be visible in the East Carbon and Sunnyside area. The federal agency indicates that traffic in locations surrounding the project will increase due to the presence of fire control personnel and equipment.
