CHS Ladies Hand Lady Farmers Loss
|Amie Stewart goes up for a shot against a Granite player on Friday night at the Dinogym. Carbon won the game 55-34 to get back on the winning track.|
Coach Bruce Bean shook off the devastating loss to Emery with pragmatic wisdom last week.
"The wheels just came off and there was nothing left to do, but pick up the pieces and move on," he said.
Well, Bean must have replaced the wheels himself and blown up the tires as the Lady Dinos came out of the gate against Granite on Friday night in the Dinogym and handed the hapless Granite team a 55-34 loss.
The Lady Farmers traveled to Price looking for their first region win, hoping to catch Carbon on their heels. But they were denied that pleasure. And to top it off, that will be the last time the Carbon and Granite girls basketball teams will meet despite the fact that Granite is new to the region this year.
Early last month the final decision was made by the Granite Board of Education to transform Granite High into a different kind of high school, one that will not field any athletic teams any more. That puts an end to over 30 years of womens interschool atheletic competion by one of the oldest high schools in the state.
The girls from Carbon had their confidence back and got down to business right after the first ball was thrown up.The game stayed close in the first half. Each team had racked up 12 by the end of the first quarter.
However, Carbon edged out the Farmers by five in the second quarter. The Lady Dinos could have already had the game broken wide open by that time if they could have hit from the line. Carbon went only two for nine at the free throw line in the first half.
Defense was the name of the game in the third quarter as Granite could only manage three points against a swarming Lady Dino squad. Carbon knocked down 13 points to give themselves a comfortable cushion going into the fourth.
The Carbon team however refused to coast and outscored the Lady Farmers 15-12 to finish the game strong.
Jamie King lit up the boards for Carbon hitting 16 points. Tabby Cummins got back on her game adding 11 and hitting two threes. Meesha Rasmussen also hit a pair of threes.
With Emery rolling over North Sanpete on Thursday, the final show down between Carbon and Emery is shaping up to be a great game. Carbon remains in second place in Region 8 play with three games to go in regular league play.
The Lady Dinos will travel to Delta on Tuesday night to face the Lady Rabbits and then they will return home on Thursday to play Juan Diego at 7 p.m.
A rematch with Emery will take place in Castle Dale on Feb. 9.
