Cottontail rabbits abound throughout Castle Valley, surrounding areas

In all parts of the county, rabbits are a common sight, feeding anywhere they have food to forage on. One of two common varieties of rabbit in the Castle Valley, the desert cottontail is a protected species. Since the species fall under the umbrella of fur bearing animals, hunting of cottontails requires a permit issued by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The cottontail's long-eared cousin, the jackrabbit is not protected and can be killed at any time of year using any method.
