Rantings and Ravings
Today I am not focusing on any weighty community issue. I just need to vent about something that just irritates the heck out of me.
I tried to go grocery shopping yesterday, in the middle of the day when almost no one else was in the store. I like to go when it isn't crowded.
I pushed my cart up the aisles and I had to wait several times for someone else to finish looking for what they wanted and then move on.
Now it wasn't that I was shopping with a bunch of rude people or anything. Several people also had to wait on me as well. It was the fact that the aisles in the store are just big enough for two carts to pass. This should make shopping ok; however, promotional displays clog almost every aisle at some point that only one cart can move through at a time.
I understand that it is a psychological marketing tool to get us to buy things we didn't know we needed. It becomes a deterrent to some of us when I look up an aisle and see a few other shoppers already trying to fit amongst the clutter and decide there is nothing on that aisle I can't live without.
For people with disabilities who rely on wheelchairs, scooters and walkers this is more than an inconvenience. It makes shopping almost impossible. When I worked for Active Re-Entry, there was one store who tried to tell the mother of a child who used a power chair that she shouldn't bring her child to the store with her. The child had knocked over a display in the middle of an aisle while trying to maneuver around it. The store was the one that needed to make the changes.
Why should we need to shop single file? I hate to feel guilty when I stop in the cookie aisle to decide what I want to buy because now someone else can't use the aisle. I mean I already feel guilty because I eat too many cookies.
It is not just a problem here in Price. And I am not just picking on the grocery stores either. It seems to me however that the bigger the store, the harder it is to get down the aisles.
I doubt my venting will change anything. I do know this irritates many more people than just me though.
And I think it affects sales too. Yesterday I started to go buy a few "extra goodies," but changed my mind because it was too much hassle to maneuver that aisle.
One less sale for the store.
