Samantha Madrid works against a Meridian defender during a game at the Viking gym last week. Meridian won 41-25.

It used to be Meridian was the laughing stock of girls basketball in the state of Utah. For three years in a row they didn't win a game against anyone.

Things are very different now. While not glossy their record this year is 2-6 and now 1-0 in Region 18 play after beating the Lady Vikings of East Carbon last Thursday 41-25.

It has not been a good year for the East Carbon girls, going 1-7 overall and only 1-3 in league play this year. But still there are bright spots as the team continues to plug along.

In this game Meridian got off to a fast start scoring 18 points in the first quarter and then ripping off another 13 in the second while holding East Carbon to 6 and 4 respectively.

Scoring wise the second half was no better for East Carbon but their defense did hold the Lady Mongooses to single digits during both periods. In fact they held the team from Provo to one basket in the fourth quarter.

Leading the Lady Vikings in scoring was Samantha Madrid with 10 points. Others scoring included Megan Larson with 4, Donna Turner who put in 6, Janet Lowe who scored 2 and Jennifer Maestas who added 3 points.

The team now faces West Desert at home tonight (Thursday). The Lady Hawks were once a powerhouse in 1A girls basketball, but in the last couple of years they have slipped a little.

However this year they lead the league in wins at 3-0, although their non-region record is an unglossy 5-4.
