Carbon recreation has moved back the dates for Junior Jazz registration to accommodate those who want to play junior high basketball.

Carbon County Recreation is currently taking registrations for their youth basketball programs that will begin in December.

Junior Jazz will dominate CCR's winter lineup. There are separate leagues for both boys and girls beginning in the third grade and continuing through 12th grade. According to Assistant Director Frank Ori, parents should sign their children up as soon as possible.

"Gym space is becoming more and more limited," he explained. "We find ourselves scheduling and rescheduling time after time with the different schools trying to accommodate as many activities as possible. It has really become a problem but we always find a way to make it work. If I were a parent I would sign my child up as soon as possible. Some leagues can accommodate a limited number of kids due to gymnasium restrictions so sign up today."

The deadline for registration for children grades third to sixth grade is Nov. 6. CCR has extended the registration deadline for grades seven to 12 to accommodate children who would like to try out for the junior high, Carbon High and East Carbon High basketball teams.

In the past the CCR deadline has come before the schools tryouts have ended, thus creating a problem.

"Every year Mont Harmon Junior High has 70 to 80 kids try out grades seven to nine, and Helper has anywhere from 30 to 50," says Ori. "Of course they all think they are going to make the team and when they don't and our deadline has already passed, they don't play any basketball at all and that's not good. We decided this year that we would extend our deadline so that everyone can play, including seventh and eighth graders who are playing for the junior highs. Extra game experience is not going to hurt anyone, especially those kids who are marginal players and who get limited minutes at the junior high level."

Ori says that the Junior Jazz program is good for everyone.

"It's certainly not going to hurt them to play both," he said.

The deadline for registration for grades seven to 12 is December 21. Volunteer coaches and scorekeepers are also needed for Junior Jazz.

Registrations can be made in person at CCR's office located at 90 North 100 East in room 145 of the Price Community Center or by mail at P.O. Box 793 Price, Utah 84501. For more information about Junior Jazz call 637-5092 or check out their website at www.carbonrec.com.
