Eastern Utah catcher Cory Newton stops a Bruin runner at the plate in the opening game of the series. In addition to stopping runs, Newton cranked a three-run homer to elevate the Eagles to a 5-4 win.

With Friday's cold and rainy weather dampening the warm and sunny spring baseball fans have enjoyed this season, the Eagles still found a way to keep warm against the Salt Lake Community College Bruins.

College of Eastern Utah took both games of Friday's double header in feverish, come-from-behind fashion.

A battle of the bats was overshadowed by the strong defensive efforts of both teams. Many players made contact but few reached the bases.

In the late innings of the first game, CEU trailed by two.

However, a three-run homer by catcher Cory Newton pushed the Eagles to a 5-4 win.

In the second game, Eastern Utah rallied for six runs after being down 7-2.

Eastern Utah closed the day with a 8-7 win.

But in Saturday's games, CEU faltered both defensively and offensively.

"We didn't hit and couldn't stop them from hitting," head coach Scott Madsen said. "Salt Lake did a good job of putting the ball in play."

The Bruins won the third and fourth games 10-1 and 10-2.

With the split, Salt Lake remains two games ahead of the Eagles in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings with a 7-9 record.

Eastern Utah is currently 5-11 in the SWAC.

CEU will host College of Southern Idaho April 2 and 3.

Southern Idaho defeated CEU in the preseason 9-4 and 8-2, but Madsen said he expects CEU to match up well with them at this point in the season.
