Castle Valley FYI


Noxious weed conference - is set March 20 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Carbon County Courthouse. Discussions will focus on defining noxious weed, identifying the types as well as locations in the county, the local control plan and how it all adds up. Presenters include USU Extension agent Marlon Winger, county weed department representatives Mikel Johnson and Matt Wise along with Steve Burningham from the Utah Department of Agriculture.

County cleanup - To assist residents in unincorporated areas with yard debris disposal, the county will place large pickup containers at the following locations from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.:

March 25, Kenilworth ball field parking area.

March 26, Spring Glen ball field parking area.

March 27, Carbonville at 1600 North Mountain States Road.

March 28, Westwood at 175 North 1280 West.

March 29, central and upper Miller Creek by the corrals.

March 31, lower Miller Creek at 7250 South 4000 East.

Helper cleanup - City crews will pick up yard debris, shrubs and branches cut into four-foot lengths during the cleanup effort. Debris should be stacked off the roadways and sidewalks. Crews will not backtrack or haul off furniture and appliances. The schedule includes:

April 1 to April 5, 1st through 5th Avenue, Castle Gate subdivision, Martin, Orchard and Bryner Street, 1st through 11th North.

April 8 to April 12, west Helper.

April 15 to April 19, east Helper.

April 22 to April 26, Locust, Maple, Poplar and Main Street, south U.S. Highway 6.

Mountain View Cemetery - Flowers should be removed from gravesides by April 1 to facilitate Helper's spring cleanup effort.

Carbon Republican Party caucus, convention - The caucus is scheduled March 25 and the county convention will be conducted April 25.

Rape crisis hotline - Rape or domestic violence victims in the Carbon-Emery County area may contact the local 24-hour crisis line toll-free at 1-866-894-8610.

Flu vaccination clinics - are scheduled at the public health department Monday to Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Food handlers classes - Two-hour sessions will be offered at the health district in Price on March 20 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Classes are planned at the health department in Castle Dale on March 21 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Test fees required. For information, contact Claron Bjork at 637-3671.

CASA - Court appointed special advocates are trained community volunteers appointed by judges to speak for children brought before the court. No special or legal background required. Screenings are conducted on all volunteers. For information, call CASA coordinator Tarasina Compagni at 636-3431.

Frontier project - is looking for clean, used clothing for families and children in need. To donate, contact the project at 637-1497.

Carbon County Triad - meets the first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. at Price senior center. Members focus on law enforcement and aging programs to assist the elderly. Meetings are open to the public.

Carbon County RSVP - Volunteers ages 55 year and older are needed. Mileage reimbursement and liability insurance provided. For information, contact the RSVP office at 637-9118.

Lifeline pregnancy assistance, support center - The facility offers free confidential pregnancy testing, verification, counseling and baby supplies. Residents may contact the center by calling the 24-hour telephone line at 636-0700.

Cans for Care-A-Van - The service is conducting an aluminum can drive to help defray the costs of providing transportation to medical appointments for the elderly and people with disabilities. Bagged cans may be dropped off at Howa's. For pickup, call the office at 637-9488.

Carbon County Humane Society - The non-profit organization offers monthly spay and neuter clinics at 98 North Carbon Avenue in Price. The group needs old towels and blankets. Members will pick up good used items for the group's rummage sale. For information, call the humane society at 637-2908.

Carbon County Animal Shelter- AVID chip pet identification is available at the shelter. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Carbon County Housing Authority - The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The children's library is open to housing residents Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Foster parents - The local DCFS office needs foster parents willing to work with teens and provide emergency shelter care. For information, contact Cindy Saccomanno at 636-0219.

Price library - Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.; closed Sunday. Story hour is Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m. Children Pet Pals activities are Tuesday from 5 to 5:30 p.m. For information, call library at 636-3188.

Family Support & Children's Justice Center - offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Helper mining museum - From Oct. 1 to April 30, hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. From May 1 to Sept. 30, hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tours may be scheduled. For information, contact Helen Tonc at 472-3009.

Prehistoric museum - From Nov. 1 to March 31, hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. From April 1 to Oct. 31, hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, call the museum at 613-5060.

Habitat for Humanity - is accepting applications for two homes. Volunteers and donations welcomed. For information, call Habitat at 636-3230 or stop by the office in the Carbon County Courthouse.

Cancer control program - Free pap smears and mammogram vouchers are available to eligible women 50 years and older at the medical clinic in East Carbon. Women 40-49 may also qualify for free mammograms. For information on income guidelines, contact the clinic weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cancer screening - Southeastern Utah Health District in Price offers checks twice a month for women up to and including age 64. Clinics include breast, pelvic and pap exams at low or no cost. Women 50 to 64 may qualify for free mammogram vouchers. Call the health department at 637-3671 to schedule appointments.

Infant immunization clinics - The health district in Price offers the clinics Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

ABC Learning Center - has books, computers and activities for adults and children. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tutoring appointments, call the center at 888-2061.

Social Security - The Price contact station is located at the county courthouse. Representatives are at the office the second Wednesday of the month from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., with a half-hour lunch break. For information, Carbon residents may call Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.

Alzheimer's support group - meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. at in room 140 at 375 S. Carbon Avenue, Price. For information, contact Lisa Perla at 637-4950.

Eating disorder support group - meets the first Thursday of the month at the Price hospital. For information, contact Sunni Olson at 636-8344.

Caring adult program - Interested residents are encouraged to contact the program at 613-5284.


Head Start yard sale - Head Start will accept donations for the playground equipment fundraiser until 3 p.m. on April 5. The sale will be conducted April 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the old Wal-Mart parking lot. For information, contact the center at 637-4960.

Yearbook archives - College of Eastern Utah Library is looking for copies of CEU and Carbon High yearbooks its archives. The missing years include 1928, 1933, 1939, 1955, 1959, 1961 and 1966. The WWII years are also missing, but the library is not positive if any were produced during the war. Contact the CEU library at 613-5209.
