Dinos and Spartans face-off at Spartan Center

After a disappointing loss against Delta, the Carbon Dinos faced their rivals, the Emery Spartans.
Coach Bruce Bean said his hopes for the match were that his team would play their own level of volleyball rather than playing at a pace set by the younger and less experienced Spartans.
Happily for Bean, the pace of the Tuesday night game at the Spartan Center was all Carbon's.
The Dinos dominated the Spartans from the opening whistle, beating their opponents in three straight games.
Last Thursday's upset by the Pioneers seemed far from the players minds as they consistently outplayed Emery in each game.
Carbon took the first game, 25-13. Emery shanked several of the Dinos' serves, never getting a chance to settle into an offense.
The Lady Spartans kept game two close early, making Carbon fight for every point. Carbon eventually began to pull away and a powerful kill by middle blocker Brittany Pollastro ended the game 25-18.
In game three, Emery got their first lead of the entire match at 8-7. But Carbon quickly took it back and edged the Spartans 24-14.
A rotational mistake by Emery awarded Carbon the final point needed to conclude the match.
"We wanted to make sure the girls did not let down because it's Emery and because of the rivalry," Bean commented. "The mistakes started creeping in during the second game, but we were ready."
Bean said he was especially impressed with the large amount of student support that travelled to Emery to cheer on their Lady Dinos.
"It was a great crowd," he praised. "I couldn't tell whether we were at Carbon or Emery."
The Dinos will travel to North Sanpete today for a region match. North Sanpete is ranked third in the state in 3A classification and Bean said he expects a tight match.
Carbon's next home match is Sept. 30 against Lehi. The game begins at 6:30 p.m.
