A Dino moves the ball quickly down the field during a game last season.

Even though the school year has not started, the Carbon High girls soccer team has already kicked off their year by participating in their first preseason game.

The Dino squad hosted Payson last Tuesday afternoon. This was the first competition the Carbon team has competed in since tryouts were completed last week.

Early season games allow coaches and athletes to gather information which enables them to make adjustments prior to the regular season. Some of the bugs that will need to be worked out include strengths and most of all the weaknesses of the team.

The early games also allows the players to become familiar with one another and the various skills that each member possesses.

Tuesday afternoon, the Dinos gathered for their first preseason game. As the team came out onto the field, they felt excited, yet a bit nervous.

By the end of the game, Carbon had suffered their first loss of the year by the final, 4-0. Despite losing, the team came out winners as they walked away with valuable experience.

"This is still a young team. We have very few girls that have competed in the sport long enough to make this team an established ball club," explained coach Dave Capalbo. "The main goal is to come out here and teach these young athletes a little bit about the sport and to have fun."

The Carbon High soccer team will play again this week as they travel to Grantsville on Friday and then they will play in Tooele on Saturday.

Region action will not begin until August 28 when the Dinos host North Sanpete.
