Motorcycle-truck collision claims life of Wellington boy
Carbon County Sheriff's officials have confirmed that a 15-year-old male was killed Saturday night while riding his off-road motorcycle in Wellington.
Nick Stamatakis was reportedly riding toward his Carbon County home, when he collided with a coal truck's trailer. He sustained fatal injuries as a result of the incident and was pronounced dead at Castleview Hospital.
According to Carbon County Sgt. David Brewer, the collision occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of Ridge Road and Lower Middle Creek Road.
It is not known at this time whether speed was a factor in the incident, according to Carbon County Chief Deputy Tom Stefanoff.
The Carbon County Sheriff's Office and Utah Highway Patrol are looking into the collision, attempting to determine what may have caused Stamatakis, who was reportedly a seasoned motorcycle rider, to hit the semi.
He reportedly made impact after using the shoulder of Ridge Road as a ramp, colliding with the trailer in mid-air, according to Sgt. Brewer. Following the initial impact, his motorcycle was pinned under the trailer and dragged by the semi, said the August 17 sheriff's office release.
Initial reports indicated that Lifeflight or Eagle Air Med services were called in to transport the Wellington teen, however, subsequent information confirmed that Stamatakis was driven by ambulance to Castleview Hospital. He remained at the Carbon County facility until the time of his death.
