Helper keeping their state title hopes alive
Helper to play St. George in quarterfinals
Helper's chances of defending their state championship survived the first of many tests as they won two games on Saturday in Logan to advance to the quarterfinals.
Helper defeated Bear River 16-0 on Saturday morning before quickly turning around to play Box Elder where they came away with another 9-3 win to move onto the quarterfinals.
Helper Head Coach Jeff Cisneros said the team benefited from Kyler Nelson and Cole Fossat throwing complete games in the two wins and a strong defensive performance.
It also helped that Helper broke out of an offensive slump that had plagued the team over the final weeks of the season.
"It was a long day with the doubleheader, but the offense hit the ball well and we got some really good pitching from Kyler and Cole," said Cisneros.
Awaiting Helper in the quarterfinals on Monday evening in Logan was St. George. The two teams are no strangers to each other as they played earlier this season, with St. George coming away with a 8-6 win.
If Helper wins, they would advance to the semifinals. If they lose, Helper would need to win six consecutive games over three days.
"A win would continue to put us in a good situation with the tournament," said Cisneros.
