Editor emeritus honored by wildlife division
John Serfustini, who began writing Utah wildlife stories as editor of the Wasatch Wave in 1975 and continues to write them as editor emeritus of the Sun Advocate, was honored recently as the Division of Wildlife Resources Southeastern Region Outreach Partner of the Year 2014.
Serfustini says that Utah's wildlife and habitat have been endlessly fascinating. "It's not like work if you enjoy what you're doing," he explains. "Over the years I have had the opportunity to hold bear cubs, crawl in the den with their mother, go rabbit hunting with a goshawk, see some gigantic fish pulled out of lakes with gill nets...and have watched machines pulverize juniper and pinyon pine to make better habitat for deer."
Serfustini says he appreciates having had the opportunity to deal with professional biologists, managers and public information officers during his career.
Now that he is retired from the day-to-day work at the newspaper, Serfustini continues to maintain his relationship with DWR.
"Don't tell anyone, but it amazes me that I get paid to do this," he quips.
