An ATV accident claimed the life of two American Fork residents and critically injured their two young grandchildren over Memorial weekend in the Castle Country's San Rafael Swell.

The incident, which occurred just after 3 p.m. on Sunday at the far west end of Eagle Canyon, took the lives of Hubert Roger Issel, 70 and his wife Alana Lea Issel, 64.

According to the Emery County Sheriff's Office, the Can-Am side-by-side driven by Hubert was traveling on an established trail, when it came to a steep rocky ledge. From investigation of the accident scene, it appears that in this area the vehicle rolled, descending 80-100 feet to the canyon floor.

Medical helicopters transported the Issel's two grandchildren, ages 7 and 8, for immediate medical treatment. Their condition has been listed as critical.

A Department of Public Safety will be on scene Tuesday to recover the side-by-side from the canyon floor.
