Over 15 Track and Field athletes to compete for CHS in Provo this weekend

After months and months of preparation, the big stage of the State Track and Field Championships at BYU is near.

With one of the biggest stages to perform on with the best of the best in 3A, as well as other classes, the athletes from Carbon High School who qualified to compete will get a shot to show off their talents.

After a finish at the Region 12 meet, which saw the team finish fourth overall, over 15 athletes from Carbon High will have a chance to compete at the State Meet.

Carbon High Head Coach Jimmy Jewkes said the weather conditions at the Region 12 Meet held in Juab were less than ideal. But despite that, several athletes had strong performances.

Senior Garrett Marsing had another strong performance breaking a school record in the 800 meter race with a time of 1:54.81.

Other athletes including Morgan Hillam had big performances at the meet which saw her qualify for the State Meet in the shot put with a throw of just over 27 feet.

Carbon High's Abbie Powell placed first in the high jump finals at the region meet with a jump clearing over five feet.

Sarah Ohlwiler took first in the girl's long jump competition at the meet with a jump of 16 feet 6 inches.

While Carbon was unable to claim a Region 12 title, Jewkes said the teams performed well and saw a lot of surprises with athletes stepping up to qualify for state.

Carbon has four girls qualified for state in the high jump and both the boys and girls have qualified multiple relay teams.

Marsing will close out his Carbon High career at the meet as he is qualified for the 800 m, 1600 m, 3200 m and the boys medley relay race.
