Former longtime coach says no replacement has been found with the 2014 season close to start of play

Eight months ago, the Helper American Legion baseball team was celebrating their newly won Utah State Championship.

Now eight months later with a new season just weeks away, there may not be a team this season.

Former longtime head coach Jeff Cisneros told the Sun Advocate on Wednesday that no one has stepped into the position of being head coach.

"We're getting down to the deadline," Cisneros said of May 15. That is the day when insurance forms, team registration and many other materials must be turned in.

Cisneros retired at the end of last season after spending 20 years coaching kids during the summer baseball season. He has focused his attention to the boys basketball program at Carbon High School citing the need to put all of his time and effort into helping out the program.

Being a head coach for the team is no easy task, Cisneros said. A coach not only has to put a team together and manage it, but they also have to take care of and maintain a playing field such as the current baseball field in Helper. He also mentioned other requirements such as fund-raising and traveling to games and tournaments on a weekly basis.

"There's a lot involved, a lot of time is required for this job," he said. "It's certainly a big commitment."

After a few seasons where the team didn't play, Cisneros said the Helper American Legion team has been going strong since the mid-1990s.

Helper finished one of their most successful seasons in history last season going 31-5 overall in a season that lasted from early June through August. The team won the Utah State Championship, beating Cyprus in back-to-back games to claim the title. Helper advanced to the Western Region Tournament in Arizona where they went 1-2 before being completing their season.

Cisneros said he is hopeful that someone will be able to serve as the head coach within the next week.
