HELPER- Fred P Martinez Jr. was born June 29, 1926 in Standardville. He passed away on April 10, 2014. He is the son of Fred Martinez and Teofila Aquilar Martinez. Fred married Merlene Southworth who preceded him in death along with his parents and brothers Benjamin and Ramon. Fred is survived by his brother Charles and his many nieces and nephews.

Fred spent his early years in the coal camps attending school at Standardville, Major and Latuda. He attended Carbon High and worked in the coal mining industries before being drafted into the army in 1944. He loyally served his country and is a proud veteran of World War II where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant of the 35th infantry regiment in the field. He earned his combat badge in the South Pacific.

Fred worked 28 years for Rio Grande Transportation and another 22 years for the Carbon School District before retiring at the age of 80. He has served with the American Legion for 40 years in several capacities.

Graveside service, Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 2 p.m. Mt. View Cemetery, Helper. Family will receive friends at Mitchell Funeral Home Tuesday from Noon to 1:40 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price where friends are welcome daily and may share memories of Fred online at
