BOUNTIFUL/EAST CARBON - Our dear sweet mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Vene Dee Nelson Turnbull, age 102, died peacefully in Bountiful on March 21, 2014. Born to James and Mary Olsen Nelson Feb. 29, 1912 in Ferron. Attended schools in Ferron and Mt. Pleasant.
Dee suffered a progressive hearing loss during her teen years and spent the remainder of her lifetime dealing with deafness, but became an accomplished "lip reader" and enjoyed a very happy and productive life.
Dee married Mitchell "Mike" Turnbull in Standardville on Oct. 16, 1931 (later solemnized in the Manti Temple). They settled in East Carbon, where they raised their son and daughter. Dee was an active member of the LDS church. One of her greatest joys was teaching in Relief Society and working with young women in MIA and 4-H. Mike and Dee served an LDS mission in Australia in 1970-72. They later retired to St. George. Mike passed away in 1988 after 57 years of marriage, and Dee later moved to Bountiful where she remained until her death.
Dee was a very loving and caring person and earned respect and admiration from everyone she met.
Dee is survived by a son Gary (Geri) Turnbull, Bountiful, a daughter, Lynn (Don) Butler, Mendon, and five granddaughters: Patricia Pickett, California, D'Lynn DuVall, Delaware, Debra Morris, Kansas, Denise Johnson, Providence, and Diana Warren, Mapleton. Also survived by eighteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Preceeded in death by her husband, grandson Michael Turnbull, parents, and nine siblings.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to North Canyon Care Center and Care Givers Support Network of Kaysville for loving care provided over the past several months.
