Just one week after mounting a huge fourth quarter comeback against Juan Diego, the Carbon High girls basketball team found themselves in a similar situation In the 3A quarterfinals against Cedar.

But this time the comeback fell short as Cedar defeated Carbon 43-29 on Thursday evening at the Centrum Arena in Cedar City.

Carbon led 7-6 after the first quarter, but Cedar's tough man-to-man defense began forcing Carbon into turnovers that led to points for the Lady Reds. Cedar used that advantage to outscore the Carbon ladies 15-5 to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.

Despite the deficit, Carbon came out with strong defense in the second half, cutting the lead to four in the third quarter.

Just when it looked like Carbon would use their momentum to retake the lead, Cedar began to spread out on offense, leaving wide open lay up opportunities that caught the Lady Dinos off guard.

The Carbon offense had difficultly getting good looks at the basket against a Cedar defense that continued to harass each pass on the baseline and in the paint.

Cedar closed out the fourth quarter by outscoring Carbon 16-10 to pick up the quarterfinal win.

Carbon senior Shelby Cornforth scored a team-high 12 points. Fellow senior Annika Hansen finished with one point.

Freshman Lindsey Blanc had six points, including the only 3-pointer for Carbon. Jordan Scoggins and Jaylie Jensen each finished with four points and Beth Child added two.

With the loss, Carbon will head home for the third consecutive year after making it to the 3A quarterfinals.
