Play-in game rematch with Payson on Tuesday to determine Region 12's third seed

After suffering a devastating 56-50 loss to Payson on Thursday evening, it looked as if Carbon High's drive to the 3A State Tournament was almost all but over.

But the door to the 3A dance is still cracked open.

Carbon High and Payson will meet in a rematch on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in a game to be held at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork.

The winner of the game would be given the Region 12 third seed in the 3A State Tournament, which starts on Friday, Feb. 21.

The play-in game is the result of a three-way tie in Region 12 between Carbon, Payson and Richfield. That required all three schools to participate in a coin toss to determine the seeds. Richfield was given the fourth seed from the region and Carbon and Payson were scheduled to play for the right to be the third seed from the region.

CHS head coach Ted Bianco said his team has another opportunity after a rough finish to the season, losing three of their final four Region 12 games.

"It's another opportunity to play another game for our team," said Bianco.

Bianco said the Lady Dinos didn't play with a sense of urgency in the first three quarters against Payson on Thursday evening at home. After trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, Carbon cut the deficit to two points late in the quarter. Carbon's Lindsey Blanc appeared to tie the game on a layup after a steal with just over a minute left. However referees said her foot was out of bounds giving Payson the ball back. Payson hit free throws down the stretch and secured the win.

"Payson will be ready to play and we must come out and play well if we want to advance," he said.

The winner of the Carbon/Payson game would advance to the first round of the 3A Tournament and a matchup with Juan Diego on Friday evening. Carbon lost to Juan Diego 60-50 on Jan. 10 at home in a game that was tied in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
