Offensive or just getting your attention

During the Superbowl on Sunday an ad ran that wasn't funny or cute.

For some it was downright offensive.

I am referring to the ad the Utah Department of Transporation ran which starts with what appears to be a little boy sleeping in his car seat in a van. However there is much more to the story.

As the camera zooms out a voice tells you that he isn't sleeping; he is dead. When the camera reaches the door of the van you realize that the van is laying on its side and the little boy and his toys are smashed against the window on the ground.

The voice finally tells the viewer that he is dead because while he was buckled in properly his parent wasn't and that when the van rolled the parent was thrown around in the vehicle crushing the life out of the little boy.

The moral of the story is that when you don't buckle up you are risking more than just your own life.

Most people don't realize that items in a car, grocerys, suitcases, animals or even a person becomes a projectile in a fast stop or a rollover. My wife actually knew a young man when she was a teenager who was killed when he rolled over his car after going scuba diving. One of the tanks hit him in the head.

But, like when you tell anyone anything, without portraying it, the importance of what is being said doesn't register what is being told to them.

Seat belts are that way. Without seeing what happens when one doesn't wear them, it is easy to discount them.

Those who go to accidents know. They know that not wearing them is deadly. Being thrown clear of a car is never really an option. It is a fluke when it does happen.

As a reporter I saw little accidents where it looked like no one should have been hurt, and someone was killed. No seatbelt. And I have seen big messy accidents where everyone walked away; almost always they wore seatbelts.

So a little attention getting, even it if upsets some people, isn't bad in my book.

Some complained that children were watching the ad and it upset them.

Well maybe, after seeing that ad, those children will remind mom, dad, brother, and sister, that not wearing seatbelts can be deadly, even to those who did the right and legal thing when they buckled up. Facing the truth is never easy. And sometimes it has to get right up in your face before you see it.
