Marlene Jesse Woodard LaVake Stoddard

CLEARFIELD - Marlene Jesse Woodard LaVake Stoddard, age 78, passed away surrounded by her loving family Jan. 15, 2014 in Clearfield. She was born Dec. 9, 1935 in Plattsmouth, Neb. to Ralph and Oleta Gilmore Woodard. She married LaVerne (Bud) Clyde LaVake on Sept. 19, 1953 in Seattle, Wash. Bud passed away Nov. 15, 1983. Later Marlene married Byron H Stoddard on Nov. 9, 2004.

Marlene was raised in Kent, Wash. as a member of the Church of God. It was in association with this church that she met her husband, Bud. Bud was in the service and so they moved to Texas where they started their family. When Bud got out of the service they moved back and forth between North and South Dakota until they settled in Bowman, N.D. It was there they owned and operated a family bakery. Working together as a family in the bakery formed special bonds.

Marlene loved sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening. She grew great vegetables and beautiful flowers. The family moved to Lemmon, S.D. where Marlene worked with the elderly and infirmed. Bud passed away in 1983 and as a widow she moved to be close to her son, Earl and his family in Rock Springs, Wyo.

In her sixties she decided to further her education and earned her GED and Associate Degree from Western Wyoming Community College. She also learned to play the piano. Marlene worked for Southwest Rehabilitation Center for over 20 years until her retirement in 2004. She loved her work there caring for individuals with special challenges.

After her retirement she loved to travel and visit family and friends. She spent as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She loved the Lord and her family. They were her top priority.

She is survived her husband Byron of Clearfield, her children: LaVerne "Clyde" (Olga) LaVake, Jr. of Rapid City, S.D.; Earl (Jackie) LaVake of Rock Springs, Wyo.; Allan (Victoria) LaVake of Hobbs, N.M.; Charlene (John) Heather of Port Orchard, Wash.; nine grandchildren including Blair and Lacey LaVake formally of Rock Springs. Wyo. 12 great grandchildren, Siblings: Reva (Cecil) Garten of Port Orchard, Wash., Johnny Moore of Kent, Wash.; Carol, Patricia, Karen, Special sisters-in-law: Brenda (Myron) Davis and Sharon (Malcolm) Beck and many other family and friends.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, LaVerne, a brother Vernon Woodard, and a baby Wade Kelly LaVake.
