Think of it as a highway on-ramp, Chancellor Joe Peterson told guests who gathered at the USU Eastern campus in Price at the ribbon cutting for a remodeled building and brand-new program at the college Jan. 8.

The program is the Center for Workforce Development, a means of reaching out to the region's employers and workers to train people to take part in a growing and changing economy. Peterson said that USU Eastern, as a community college, has traditionally served as an on-ramp to give students access to the road of advancement in trade careers or for more advanced degrees at other institutions.

The center is likewise dedicated to creating and sustaining employment, Peterson said, becoming another access ramp for the region's students.

The brick building on 300 East Street used to house ceramics classes. Now, with a row of big picture windows facing the busy street, it houses a staff that will help match what skill training the college can offer to what employers and potential employees need.

"People have asked if the college will continue with its career and technical education since the merger with Utah State University. This building is an answer to that question," the chancellor said.

He added that it is also an answer to the question about how the college will continue to relate to its business and industry partners.

Peterson was addressing a crowd of civic, business and academic representatives from Castle Country who showed up for the open house that bracketed the ribbon cutting ceremony.
