Win streak over for USU Eastern men
In Scenic West Athletic Conference play, anything can happen.
There are no gimmes.
Heading into a matchup with Salt Lake Community College on Saturday, Jan. 11 with a nine-game win streak and ranked #11 in the NJCAA polls, the Bruins took an early lead in the first half and never let the Golden Eagles get within eight points throughout the second half in a 90-74 loss for the USU Eastern men.
The Bruins shot 63 percent from the field, including 8-of-14 (57 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bruins also cut off the Golden Eagles from getting second chance opportunities with a 43-21 edge on the boards.
"The numbers said it all," said USU Eastern head coach Adjalma Becheli.
"We can't expect to beat a team when things like that happen."
Kendahl Amerson led the team with 25 points and Jaleni Neely added 21 points, including shooting 13-of-14 from the free throw line.
The loss comes off the heels of USU Eastern's 74-61 win over Snow College on Thursday, Jan. 9.
While the high ranking is something that shows how well USU Eastern has played, Becheli said the team is focused solely on playing well as a team and getting wins.
"We're not worried about the rankings," Becheli said.
Becheli said the team was more focused on the missed opportunity of being 5-0 in SWAC play. With the loss to SLCC, USU Eastern is now in a 3-way tie with College of Southern Idaho and SLCC for first place.
Now the Golden Eagles, 17-2 overall and 4-1 SWAC, will head on one of their toughest road trips of the season to the Idaho colleges this weekend. It's a challenge that Becheli is hoping his team will embrace to play tough teams on the road.
"It will be a good test for us to see how we respond after a hard loss," Becheli said. "We need to answer the challenge
