Dominate defense lifts Carbon over Grantsville
Complete team win sets up huge non-region contest on Friday night against Juan Diego
As non-region play begins to wind down, the Carbon High girls basketball team may be playing their best as a team.
And it's no coincidence that at their best, the Lady Dinos are winning.
Carbon High picked up another win with a dominate defensive effort against Grantsville in a 55-20 win on Tuesday night at the CHS Gymnasium.
"I think our team has figured out to share the ball really well and just play together as a team," said CHS head coach Ted Bianco.
Bianco cited the hard work on defense the Lady Dinos employed against Grantsville which saw the home team finish with an amazing 38 steals and an untold number of deflections.
"Our girls have worked really hard on defense and it's helped us have a nice turnaround over the last few weeks," Bianco said.
Carbon held Grantsville to just four points in the first half, using their pressing defense to disrupt their opponents into turnovers.
The Lady Dinos led 28-4 at halftime and had a 45-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Katie Basinger led the offensive attack with a game-high 22 points for the Dinos.
Carbon has also seen the emergence of players including Jordan Scoggins who finished with 11 points and 12 steals and Lindsey Blanc who had five points and a steal.
"Jordan has really stepped us for us and she's been a big positive influence on the team," he said.
With the win, the Lady Dinos are now set for one of their biggest games of the year against Juan Diego on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. It may well be the biggest non-region home game in some time for the Lady Dinos.
Bianco said Juan Diego will provide the Lady Dinos with a team that plays hard, rebounds well and could be a preview of a team that could make some noise come 3A Tournament time in February.
"We need to believe that we can compete with anybody," said Bianco. "I want the girls to come away, win or lose, saying they gave their best effort out there on the court."
