A Pleasant Grove man died after reportedly driving his vehicle directly into the path of an oncoming coal truck Friday night on U.S. Highway 6.

The collision, which occurred at 6:55 p.m. caused the dual-trailer semi to jackknife and catch fire, closing Highway 6 in both directions until after 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Utah Public Safety Spokesperson Joe Dougherty.

"Coal was spilled across both lanes of traffic and fire crews from Spanish Fork were also tasked with cleaning up the fluids which leaked from the semi," he said.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash and still have not determined why the eastbound Acura crossed into the path of the westbound semi, continued Dougherty.

Gregory D. Leavitt, 34, the only occupant of the car, was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene by public safety officials.

The driver of the semi, David Lewis, from Orem, was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and was released.
