A fatality in Spanish Fork Canyon closed U.S. Highway 6 in Utah County on Friday night.

The incident took place when a late model Acura collided head on with a multi-trailer coal truck at mile marker 180 at 6:55 p.m.

The impact caused the semi's trailers to jackknife, spilling coal across the road and causing the cab to burst into flames. Spanish Fork Fire officials responded and managed to put out the blaze in short order, according to Utah Public Safety Spokesperson Joe Dougherty.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash and have stated that the road will be closed for several hours, most likely until the early hours of Saturday morning.

While it is alleged that the Acura's driver veered into the oncoming semi, troopers have not yet determined what caused him to swerve. The driver, who appears to be the only occupant of the car, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver's name will not be released until next of kin has been notified, said the public safety spokesperson.

The driver of the semi was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The Utah Department of Transportation has posted several alternate routes on their website at
