Injuries, sickness leave Lady Panthers shorthanded in 37-27 home loss

When the Pinnacle girls basketball team took on Wendover, they weren't just facing one formidable opponent. They were dealing with several at the same time.

Pinnacle (2-4 overall) put forth a valient effort but fell to Wendover 37-27 on Friday evening that saw a handful of players out due to sickness, injuries and even some bothersome wisdom teeth.

Those factors may have played a role in Pinnacle being put in an early 15-3 hole in the first quarter. But the Lady Panthers battled back cutting down the lead in the second quarter and going into halftime trailing 18-16.

But a second slow start in the third quarter proved to be the difference as Wendover used a 12-4 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

PHS head coach Rob Harmon said the slow start was just too much to overcome in the end.

"Despite having multiple players out, I was pleased with the effort the girls gave," Harmon said."The first quarter just killed us and we were not able to overcome it."

Tiana Burton led Pinnacle with a team-high nine points. Maggie Syrett and Raycee Birch each added five points respectively. Dellenie Paletta and Stefania Melendez each had four points for the Lady Panthers.

Harmon said his team will need to cut down on turnovers and simple mistakes if they want to improve. He said there was glimpses of solid play in the game and despite the loss the team can build upon those going forward.

"We're still trying to find our identity out there," Harmon said. "We're improving and we just need to keep working hard in practice and competing hard in games."
