PRICE/BELLWOOD,Ill. - The Very Rev. Archimandrite Athanasios Emmert, age 78, passed away on Oct. 23, 2013 in Chicago, Ill.
A native of Maryland, who served more than a dozen parishes nationally and was involved in the international ecumenism in the 1970's. He was initiated into the Greek Orthodox Church in 1957 and was ordained as Father Athanasios in 1960. He became a priest for an archdiocese, and served in New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Canada, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Chicago. He was made Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne of Constantinople in 2000 by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. For his first 25 years as a Reverend, he served as an Antiochian Orthodox Priest and had been technically "on loan" to the Greek Orthodox diocese of Denver from the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the U.S.A. He was fluent in Greek and German and studied the Armenian language. For the past 13 years Fr. Emmert was the pastor of The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price.
Funeral Service, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, 10 a.m. St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1220 S. 60th Ct., Cicero, Ill. Family and friends will be received Monday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Church. Committal service, Elmwood Cemetery.
