An immigrant's son addresses Italian lodge

Price Mayor Joe Piccolo addresses members of the Italian Lodge Stella d'America and guests at their Columbus Day dinner Sunday. Piccolo talked about the challenges facing Carbon County as coal mining declines, but he reminded the audience that early immigrants had to face even tougher times. His own father immigrated here from the Calabria region of Italy at the age of seven. By the time he was 11 years old he was working in the coal mines. The struggle in the New World meant that many people, like his father, had no childhood. Like the original settlers, he said, success depends on dealing with "what reality is bringing to our doorstep...When you are from Price, Utah, you don't think you can do much. But you can," the mayor concluded.
