With two term Mayor Orlando LaFontaine stepping down at the end of the year, East Carbon will have a new mayor come Jan. 1.

To help city residents decide who will serve as the town new chief administrator, the Sun Advocate has agreed to host a candidate debate on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Bruin Point Elementary.

Vying for the position are Barbara Robinett and Barbara Fisher as well as write in candidates Marcus Palacios and Charles Williams.

The debate will be moderated by Sun Advocate Associate Editor John Serfustini. The format will include both prepared questions which the candidates will have in advance as well as audience quires.

The participants will be asked: What is your opinion of the merger of East Carbon and Sunnyside into a single city? Be sure to include the reasons for your answer. In your opinion, what are the duties of the mayor in relation to the council and outside entities? How should East Carbon and Sunnyside improve their municipal water situation? What is the single most important improvement you would want to make in East Carbon?

Each candidate will three minutes to answer the question and then after all participants have answered they will be given a two minute rebuttal.

Following the prepared section, those in attendance may ask one question which each candidate will then have two minutes to respond to. Follow up questions may be asked only after all in attendance have had the opportunity to speak. Public questions will close at 8 p.m.

The debate is a public forum and all voters are encouraged to attend and participate.
