The Mike Ballard Memorial Fundraiser is an annual golf tournament, banquet and concert that help to raise money for qualified individuals or organizations. It is hosted by Carbon County Employees and Carbon County Community Members who volunteer countless hours each year to make the event a huge success. The current committee consists of Linda Ballard, Rose Barnes, Tom King Jr., Micha Marrelli, Rhonda Peterson, Shalee Johansen and Frank Ori Jr.

Each year the committee takes applications for qualified individuals in November, December and January. Applicants must apply on or before January 31, 2014. Recipients are then chosen from a very specific set of guidelines. Anyone who is interested in applying for funds may do so by contacting the Carbon County Human Resource Office, located at 120 East Main Street in downtown Price.

In the four years of its existence the Mike Ballard Memorial Fundraiser has generated a gross total of $65,658.83. The charity has donated money to help Linda Ballard, Habitat for Humanity, Shirley Stubbs and this year's recipient Mr. Richard Simmons.

The tournament began in 2010, not as a fundraiser at all but as a Carbon County Employee Golf Tournament. Rose Barnes, Robert Pero and Nancy Ferderber were the original members of the committee. After a few unsuccessful attempts to generate interest among Carbon County Employees to play in the tournament the committee decided to change the format to include anyone who wanted to register at team. Carbon County Recreation Department was asked to help and the new committee decided that all the funds generated would go to one deserving individual or organization.

Initially the committee did not have an organization or individual designated to receive the funds. Mike Ballard had recently been in a tragic accident and was in a coma. The committee asked Linda Ballard if she would allow the funds from the new golf tournament to be donated to her and her husband. She agreed and the Mike Ballard Golf Tournament was born.

The tournament was able to generate over 23 thousand dollars in its initial year of existence. Following Mike's passing Linda and the committee felt that they needed to continue the tournament in Mike Ballard's name and each year, pick a new and worthy recipient of the funding.

In each of its four years of existence, The Mike Ballard Memorial Golf Tournament has not only filled to capacity but every year there is a waiting list of teams hoping for a spot.

"It is one of the best tournaments of the year. There have been years where I have to stop Rose Barnes and Frank Ori from accepting any more teams," said Tom King, Carbon Country Club Golf Pro.

Each year the committee tries to improve the fundraiser. In 2013 it was expanded to include a catered banquet and a concert for the entire community to enjoy.

The Carbon Country Club catered the food. They served grilled salmon, baked chicken, rice, potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a desert. The band that performed was a specialty band from Park City, Utah called Mullet Hatchet. They are a southern style rock band who plays the Doobie Brothers, the Allmans, ZZ top and Skynyrd. Over 200 people attended and enjoyed dinner and entertainment. The committee intends to bring back Mullet Hatchet next year.

If you have yet to experience any aspect of the Mike Ballard Memorial Fundraiser the 2014 event is scheduled for June 28. You can register your team now. All donations are welcome.

If you are an organization or individual and want to apply for funds from the Mike Ballard Memorial Fundraiser contact the Carbon County Human Resource Office located at 120 East Main or call Rose Barnes at 435-636-3290.

Applications are due on January 31, 2014.
