Extensive damage in Spring Glen fire

Fire raged through a cluster of outbuildings and recreational vehicles in Spring Glen Monday night, causing extensive property damage but no injuries.

Helper Fire Chief Mike Zamantakis said the blaze was called in shortly after 10 p.m. It was already well under way by the time his crew arrived at the scene, about a mile south of town near the underpass of Kenilworth Road. Fire fighting was complicated by the nature of the structures involved. "Fuel tanks were exploding," Zamantakis explained.

Before firefighters from Helper and Price quelled the flames, the fire had destroyed:

a garage;

a motorcycle and ATV in the garage;

whatever tools and equipment were in the garage;

a camping trailer;

a fifth wheel; and

a motor home.

The fire chief estimated that Helper and Price trucks sprayed more than 7,000 gallons to knock down the fire. Even so, the fire continued to smolder, so it was 3 a.m. before the last fire fighters left.

The wreckage was still smoking slightly Tuesday morning. Shortly before noon, there were reports of flames jumping up again so fire fighters were called again to the scene.

Zamantakis said the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
