Dinos shut down and out by North Sanpete 37-0
For any team playing football, miscues are bound to happen. A penalty. A missed catch. A fumble.
Any one or a combination of those can occur which means teams must do their best to work around them in the quest to win the game.
But for the Carbon High School football team, those miscues are costing them. Dearly.
North Sanpete took advantage of a number of Dino miscues as the Hawks ran out to a big halftime lead as they sent the Dinos home empty-handed with a 37-0 loss on Friday evening.
In the first half, the Dinos allowed a safety on a fourth down play inside their own 10-yard line and a fumble on a option played gave the Hawks good field position to work with. The Hawk defense also stepped up as they held the Dinos without a first down in the first half as they controlled the tempo on both sides of the ball.
The Carbon offense struggled to move the ball throughout the game, gaining only 66 yards rushing and collecting only three first downs in the game. The Dinos picked up a first down on offense midway through the third quarter. The passing game was a struggle as well as the Dinos finished 1 for 11 for one yard.
The game was delayed for about 20 minutes in the first quarter after Carbon High's Garrett Blanc went down with an injury. An ambulance was called as Blanc stayed down on the field until he was taken to a local hospital. According to Blanc's Facebook page, he says he suffered a concussion and will be sitting out the rest of the season.
The delay didn't make things any easier for the Dinos as North Sanpete scored on the first play after the delay on a 15 yard touchdown run by Spencer Applegarth. Applegarth, who led the Hawks with 82 yards rushing, also added a 27 yard touchdown in the second quarter.
The Dinos best offensive series saw them advance the ball down inside the red zone in the third quarter. However, Carbon failed to convert a fourth down pass play after Logan Olsen took over for starter Zac Hathaway.
Justin Christensen had an interception for the Dinos as the defense also racked up five sacks led by Marcus Santi's two sacks in the contest.
Since scoring in the fourth quarter against American Leadership Academy on Aug. 30, the Dinos have been shut out over the last eight quarters spanning two games (Duchesne and North Sanpete).
With the loss, Carbon finished non-region play with a record of 0-4. Region 12 play will begin this Friday night (Sept. 20) as the Dinos will play host to Grantsville (4-0) at the Carbon High Football Field at 7 p.m.
