First Friday on Main Street in Helper on Sept. 6 will feature the dedication of the Train Mosaic at 6:00 p.m at the Western Mining and Railroad Museum.

The mosaic, begun in June, 2012, is a joint project between Helper City, The 2012 Helper Arts and Music Festival and The Western Mining and Railroad Museum.

Measuring 5 feet high by 14 feet long, the glass and multicolored porcelain tile wall took about 14 months to complete, with the finishing touches applied in August of this year.

The mosaic was designed by Salt Lake City professional mosaic artist, Elise Lazar, who has captured the essence of the regional history - particularly the railroad, coal and gas industries that shaped the community of Helper and the surrounding areas.

With the help of local artists, the children who participated in last year's Art in the Park program, local construction businesses and private donors, this public art project is the first of it's kind in Helper. The mosaic is a colorful focal point of the courtyard immediately adjacent to the museum that displays railroad and mining artifacts.

This project is designated as a "Random Act of Art" by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums who also played a major role in the funding of this community treasure.

A plaque will be affixed beside the wall with the help of Derek Way of Wayco Construction and Original Creations, Inc.
