Texas ends Helper Legion run at regionals
With their backs against the wall after losing on Friday night, Helper fell behind early to League City, Texas and were eliminated from from Regional Tournament play with a 6-1 loss on Saturday morning in Surprise, Ariz.
The Texas state champions scored runs in each of the first four innings to take an early 4-1 lead that proved to be too much to overcome for Helper. They added two more insurance runs in the eighth to take a 6-1 lead. Helper's lone run came in the third inning as Cole Fossat scored on a Dakota Cisneros sacrifice fly.
Helper starting pitcher Derek Young threw seven innings allowing 10 hits and six runs, four earned while striking out six and walking none.
The Helper offense was kept off balance by Texas starter Joseph Cayer who threw a complete game scattering four hits while allowing one run over nine innings. Helper's Ridge Nielson finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and was the only Helper player with more than one hit.
With the loss, Helper was eliminated from the regional tournament. In head coach Jeff Cisneros' last season after 20 years as manager of the squad, Helper finishes the season with an overall record of 31-5 and a Utah State Championship.
