Carbon County Sheriff's deputies recovered the body of a missing Wellington man Thursday from the bottom of a canyon in the remote Mounds area of the county.

Lt. Tory Christiansen identified the victim as 43-year-old Chris Bailey, who had been reported missing on Tuesday. Relatives spotted the wreckage as they searched for the victim.

Christiansen said evidence at the scene showed that Bailey had driven his 1995 black Jeep Wrangler off a 400-foot cliff. The recovery team had to follow a dry creek bed to reach the wreck, which was about two miles south of Highway 6, between Farnum and Mounds.

"The accident location was very remote," commented Christiansen. "We tore up a couple of vehicles while looking for the scene."

Christiansen said the body had been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office.
