Price Library must follow planning path before it gets renovation funds

Readers at the Price City Library take part in children's activities like arts and crafts and Pet Paws. Trouble is, they have to take part whether they want to or not.

That was a quip from library board member Nadine Morris, who was explaining the reasoning behind the board's request for funds to make over the floor plan. With upstairs and downstairs separated and no handicap access at all on the west side, incompatible activities often wind up getting crammed into limited usable space.

Some modification of the floor plan, including the addition of a wheelchair ramp, would improve the function of the facility without having to build a new library.

"The space is there. We just need the access," seconded Libarian Norma Procarione.

It sounded like a good idea to the mayor and council but they turned it down anyway. The reason was that Price has a capital improvements planning process that looks forward three to five years.

The Library Board, in its enthusiasm, has not taken part in the process. However, as a result of a motion by Grady McEvoy and unanimous council support, library proposals will be part of the long-term capital planning process.

The council also agreed to split the cost of a needs assessment study with the library. Procarione will have to find up to $5,000 in her existing budget, with the rest coming from other city accounts.
